About:
Grace House Clinic provides primary care services through initial intake screenings to underserved and at-risk women undergoing treatment for substance use at Grace House, a rehabilitation facility. Many of the women seeking treatment at Grace house have undergone a variety of traumas in their lives. Some of the women have not been seen by a primary care physician in years, some may be homeless, and many have co-occurring mental illnesses. Guided by trauma informed care principles, Grace House Clinic aims to support these women by providing access to vital reproductive health and preventive care services. The clinic seeks to provide a safe place for the patients to assist in their healing and their successful completion of the Grace House rehabilitation program.
In addition to the medical knowledge gained through patient interactions, T1/T2 volunteers can expect to gain lifelong skills of listening, compassion, and empathy. Through just one shift at Grace House, one comes to realize that the type of healing needed for these women goes beyond just physical concerns. Emotional and mental healing are just as important to their overall recovery. Grace House Clinic seeks to support these women holistically. Our only expectations of volunteers are that they come to Grace House with open hearts and open minds. Tulane shares this wonderful clinic with LSU medical students, a collaboration that further enhances the experience of volunteers through the sharing of knowledge.
