APAMSA is a national organization that brings students together that are involved in the unique health issues of Asian American and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The Tulane APAMSA Health Screening Program emphasizes providing care in various APIA communities within New Orleans, and to that end we encourage many of our multilingual volunteers, particularly in Vietnamese, Mandarin, and Spanish, to participate in our health screenings to better cater to the needs of our target populations.

SAMSA is an organization that aims to unify South Asian medical students across the United States. As a chapter, we hope to increase interest in and raise awareness of healthcare issues affecting South Asian communities locally and globally and to share the rich South Asian Culture with our peers at Tulane University School of Medicine.

The Crescent City Farmers Market hosts nearly 60 local small farmers, fishers, and food producers weekly and more than 150,000 shoppers annually. The market accepts EBT and also has “market match” to spend on locally produced fruits or vegetables! This clinic emphasizes preventive healthcare and patient education, with regular health screenings on a monthly basis: blood pressures, heart rate, weight, and offers curated healthy recipes with ingredients from vendors within the market. Patients at this site are from all over New Orleans and are often regulars, so it’s wonderful for long-term patient connections.

UNITY apartment complexes offer shelter for those who need help with housing. The clinics emphasize preventive healthcare and patient education, offering regular health screenings for patients on a monthly basis. This includes taking blood pressure, heart rate and weight management. Unity serves individuals who have experienced long-term homelessness, many of whom are veterans. Unity has recurrent patients because they live at the locations.

The FIT clinic, associated with Health Advocacy for Justice Impacted Communities (HAJIC), provides health screenings and education to primarily justice impacted individuals and others living in the Greater New Orleans area, specifically bringing attention to conditions that are prevalent in justice impacted communities. The healthcare system is difficult for individuals who have been released to navigate. FIT’s goal is connect individuals coming out of incarceration with healthcare resources. Moreover, they hope to build trust between justice impacted individuals and healthcare systems through our health education and health screening sessions.

The patients seen in our free student-run clinics face many non-medical issues that hinder their access to healthcare. To assess these needs, we established a medical-legal partnership (MLP), which screens vulnerable patients for non criminal legal issues like food stamps, FEMA disaster benefits, employment, and housing problems and arranges pro bono or limited-cost legal aid to help them solve them. We use a screen formed as a partnership between Tulane Medical School, Tulane Law School, and Southeast Louisiana Legal Services to provide assistance and advocate for patients.

LMSA is a national organization that brings together and empowers medical students and physicians through service, mentorship, and education with the goals of advocating for and improving the health outcomes of members of the Latinx and Hispanic communities. Our organization provides free health screening, including blood pressure and glucose checks. We also provided medical education in Spanish, along with information on local clinics.

The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.
