About:
New Orleans Mission (NOM) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) Christian Humanitarian Organization ‘dedicated to relieving human suffering’. NOM combats poverty, hunger, homelessness, exploitation and oppression with the provision of food, clothing, shelter, medical care and other basic necessities of life. NOM aims to facilitate the healing and development of healthy and self-sustaining individuals by addressing issues of addiction, abuse and human trafficking through their Christian Discipleship/Recovery Programs.
The patient population consists of nightly visitors of both genders, as well as men in the NOM Disciples Program for reentry. While Disciples belong to NOM’s long-term structured program, NOM also opens its doors to the homeless for dinner and temporary stays to non-disciples. We will be seeing both Disciples and short-term guests at the NOM Clinic. A study with limited data has shown that common complaints at NOM Clinic have historically included musculoskeletal issues and infectious disease concerns. However, a more comprehensive needs assessment is necessary to further characterize the medical concerns of the NOM patient population. Nonetheless, NOM patients may present with a wide unpredictable assortment of conditions. As such, patient counseling and referrals are invaluable to advocating for patients, and facilitating access to care for conditions beyond the scope of our practice.actions.
